On the Record is a daily quiz game that challenges players on their news knowledge. After serving as a consultant on the initial beta release, I conducted a redesign to align On the Record's look and growth strategy with other Washington Post games — introducing more varied question types, a consistent scoring mechanic, and uniform registration and UI behavior.

Process overview

  • Gathered and prioritized player feedback from various sources, including surveys, reviews, and direct comments.

  • Updated On the Record's visual design to match the Washington Post’s and gaming design systems.

  • Ensured all designs were adaptable across different devices and screen sizes.

  • Introduced a consistent scoring mechanic to simplify the daily play experience to cater to a broader audience.

  • Conducted internal user testing to evaluate the new designs and game mechanics.

  • Finalized designs and coordinated with development teams for implementation.

“Engagement in our games is at an all-time high with a majority of users returning to play, some as many as 30 times in the same month. On the Record adds even more value to the user experience. The game connects players to Post journalism in a new, fun and interactive way. It highlights The Post’s coverage, while challenging our audience and rewarding those who play daily.”
